Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi and former State BJP spokesperson Mira Borthakur joined hands in protest against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 on Sunday, in Beltala market in Guwahati.

In a bid to create awareness among the common people against the Bill, the KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi met local businessmen at the Beltala market.

Interestingly, at a time when the ruling BJP supported the implementation of Citizenship (Amendment ) Bill 2016, Mira Borthakur who raised her voice against the Bill joined the mass signing drive launched by Akhil Gogoi in Beltala market on Sunday.

Akhil Gogoi and Mira Borthakur both appreciated each other for their common interest to save the greater Assamese community.

KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi said, “Mira Borthakur’s step is really commendable. After being a senior BJP leader, she raised her voice against the Bill.”

Talking to media, Mira Borthakur said, “The government should withdraw the Bill on national basis.”

Borthakur further said that she would hand over the whole report of the mass signing drive to Akhil Gogoi.

Both Gogoi and Mira Borthakur also shouted the slogan ‘Joi Aai Asomo’.

On the other hand, KMSS Advisor Bedanta Laskar informed media that KMSS activists distributed around 2000 leaflets among people to create awareness against the Bill on Sunday.

Laskar told Northeast Now that they would protest against the Bill till the end of the last activist’s life.

Earlier, BJP’s Guwahati MP Bijoya Chakravarty and Dispur MLA  Atul Bora also protested against the Bill.

KMSS started the leaflet distribution programme among common people against the Citizenship Bill at Guwahati’s Chandmari on Sunday morning.
