Demanding termination of the construction of 168 river dams in Arunachal Pradesh, Krishak Mukti Sagram Samiti (KMSS) expressed concern over the cracks at 600 MW Kameng dam, during an experiment on Sunday.
In a press release, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi said, “The crack in the dam during its experiment before production of electricity has proved its destructive nature. Assam will have to face severe consequences once the construction is complete.”
The press release further stated that different political and non-political organizations along with public have reiterated their opposing stand on the construction of dams in earthquake prone Arunachal Pradesh.
“Construction of dam in the earthquake prone Arunachal Pradesh is not safe and secure. On the other hand, NEEPCO did not give any importance on safety measures during the construction of the Kameng dam,” said Akhil Gogoi.
The KMSS further alleged that the construction company NEEPCO tried to conceal the fact.
KMSS also expressed concern over the other 167 dams which are to be constructed soon in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Central government allegedly did not give any importance on possible effects, which will be faced by Assam after construction of the river dams.
Akhil Gogoi expressed his anguish at Assam government’s silence in the matter. He said, “The BJP government is now under lobby’s control.”
