President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India, law ministry confirmed on Thursday.
Taking the baton from CJI Dipak Misra, Justice Gogoi will assume office on October 3, 2018, as the 46th CJI, tenure ending in November 2019, Indian Express reported.

CJI Misra on September 4 had recommended Justice Gogoi, the senior most judge present in the Supreme Court, as his successor.
The recommendation was processed to President Kovind to issue the warrant of appointment, which was confirmed on Thursday.
Earlier, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar said that government’s intention on the appointment of the next CJI should not be questioned and that the executive would take a call.

Justice Gogoi, who will be the 46th chief justice of India, has delivered many key judgments including on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, and will hold the post till November 17, 2019.
Born on November 18, 1954 in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district, Justice Gogoi joined the Bar in 1978. He practised mainly in the Gauhati High Court. He was appointed as the permanent judge of Gauhati High Court on February 28, 2001.
Later in 2010, he was transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court on September 9, 2010.
A year into his transfer, Justice Gogoi was appointed as the Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12, 2011.
He was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on April 23, 2012. Since then Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been serving the apex court as a senior judge.
