Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said the judiciary plays an important role in establishing good governance and making the society free form corruption. He said this while taking part at the release of book ‘Gauhati High Court- History & Heritage’ at a programme held at Gauhati High Court premises.

Speaking on the occasion Sonowal said people desire expeditious delivery of justice and the Gauhati High Court has significantly fulfilled that expectation. Saying that the Gauhati High Court occupies an important position in the justice delivery system of the country, Sonowal appreciated its role in upholding laws in the state. He termed this as a reflection of honesty, integrity and commitment of the High Court towards the people of the state.

Sonowal also called for coordinated efforts of the four pillars of democracy in the country to make the democratic edifice more robust and vibrant. He also lauded the initiatives of Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajit Singh in setting up fast track courts to deal with rhino poachers and women atrocity related cases.

He said that the newly released book which is written by internationally acclaimed writer Arup Kumar Dutta would adequately highlight the glorious journey of Gauhati High Court during last seven decades. He also announced that this book would be made available in all the district libraries of the state so that the young generation and common citizen would get an opportunity to acquaint themselves with the rich history and heritage of this apex court.

He also recalled the contributions of Tarun Ram Phukan, Nabin Chandra Bordoloi, Gopinath Bordoloi, Rohini Kumar Choudhury, Bishnuram Medhi and many other legendary personalities in setting the foundation of the Gauhati High Court.

Supreme Court Justice Ranjan Gogoi while speaking on the occasion said that the book would be a great source of information on the evolution of judicial system of the north east India.

Supreme Court Judges Justice Sarad Arvind Bobde,  Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Author Arup Kumar Dutta, Chief Justice of High Court of Kerala Hrishikesh Roy, Chief Justice of Gauhati  High Court Ajit Singh, Director General of Publication Division Dr Sadhana Raut,  Gauhati High Court Bar Association president Atul Chandra Buragohain also delivered speech on the occasion. The book release function was also attended by retired judges of Supreme Court of India Justice Mukunda Kam Sharma and Justice Amitabh Roy, Judges of Gauhati High Court, eminent jurists, lawyers among others.
