The Joint Action Committee- a forum of various student unions and tribal organizations of Assam has started its much hyped Sangkalpa Yatra from Jonai in Dhemaji district on Sunday.

Several hundred protesters including members of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and various tribal organizations are taking part in the Sangkalp Yatra to protest against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The protesters, who gathered at Jonai HSS play ground this morning, shouted slogans against the state and central governments. They later took out motor cycle rally along National Highway 15 and marched to Guwahati via Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur districts of north Assam.

The committee with the help of various organizations will organize a ‘Protirodh Samabesh (Mass rally)’ at Dispur on November 16 to register their protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The committee is also organizing massive ‘Gana Satyagrah’ in each district of the state to garner consensus of the people on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The ‘Joint Action Committee’ was constituted in a public meeting organized at Dhemaji recently. It includes representatives of various students union, KMSS and various community organizations.

The leaders of protesting organizations are of the opinion that the citizenship bill will disrupt the implementation of ‘Assam Accord’ which was signed to mark the end of six-year long anti foreigner movement in Assam. They appealed to all the indigenous people of Assam to stand against the bill and oppose government’s move to pass it.
