Recently, after inspecting the works at Umroi Airport in Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya transport minister Sniawbhalang Dhar had also announced that Indigo airlines would introduce the flight service from July 20, 2019.
Dhar had informed that another aircraft would be also operated later from Umroi to Raipur via Kolkata.
Regarding the possible expansion of the Umroi airport, minister Dhar had expressed doubt whether the airport could be expanded or not as a huge amount of fund is required to upgrade the airport for landing of big aircraft.
Umroi airport has not been fully functional till date, and only small aircrafts are being operated.
Minister Dhar said that as per a report, it is not feasible to upgrade the airport because of some obstacles and discussion is on about building a new airport that requires less expenditure.
