Assam and Meghalaya are likely to witness thunderstorm and gusty wind accompanied by heavy to very heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours.

The Indian Metrological Department, in its recent All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin said thunderstorm accompanied with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely to hit isolated places over Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall are very likely at isolated places over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. Heavy rainfall are expected at isolated places over Assam and Meghalaya, the report said.

Northeast India states have always been a victim of natural calamities during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons. During Cyclone Fani last month, several hundred houses collapsed in Assam and Meghalaya.

Though northeast witnessed gross rainfall deficit of about 14 percent during the pre-monsoon season, good rainfall during the monsoon will be beneficial for the farmers.
