Manipur University was in the news since first week of June following agitation by the students and teachers of the university demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Adya Prasad Pandey on charges of irregularities.

However the university resumes its normal functioning from August 23 after the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between university community consisting of students, teachers and staff bodies, Ministry of HRD official and state government official in presence of the state chief minister N Biren Singh on August 16.

However fresh unrest in the university campus started after law enforcing agencies conducted a search at the boy’s hostels of the university in the wee hours of September 21 reportedly based on a complaint by Vice Chancellor Prof K Yugindro. Prof Pandey handed over the charge of VC to Prof Yugindro a day after he was put under suspension by the Ministry of HRD on September 17.

During the raid, police picked up more than 80 students and some teachers for verification. However six teachers and seven students were reportedly detained in judicial custody. The said teachers were suspended as they have been remanded into judicial custody reports said quoting statement of VC in charge Prof Yugindro.

Meanwhile senior most Prof W Vishwanath of Manipur University who was even named as VC in charge, also appealed to release the arrested students and teachers considering their academic careers.

Ethno heritage council, a civil society organisation, has demanded immediate release of all the arrested students and teachers of Manipur University, asserting that detention of students and teachers cannot bring any solution to the university crisis.

Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights appealed to the state authorities to immediately remove security forces from the varsity campus in the interest of the students.
