In another case of kidnapping in Garo Hills of Meghalaya, a ginger trader from Krishnai in Assam’s Goalpara district, has been kidnapped by a group of 5-6 miscreants on Tuesday morning at Bansam Awe under Chiading Police Station in East Garo Hills.

Informing this, East Garo Hills police said the kidnapped ginger trader from Assam has been identified as Tapos Maji, aged 36-37 years, son of Jita Maji of Krishnai near the vegetable market of Krishnai under Krishnai Police Station in Assam’s Goalpara.

“The trader has been kidnapped by a group of miscreants numbering around 5-6 people at Bansam Awe under Chiading Police Station while he was en route to Rongsak market,” said police.

“All the gang members had their faces covered and only one of them reportedly had a pistol. Search operation is on and an all-out effort is being made to rescue the kidnapped victim,” said the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills.

It may be mentioned that a school teacher-cum-assistant pastor of a local church in South Garo Hills was kidnapped by a group of unknown miscreants on October 1, 2018.

However, the victim, Sundaybirth Ch Marak, who was kidnapped by a group of six unidentified miscreants, was able to break free from captivity and flee to safety.

The report further stated that Marak was kidnapped from his house in Kakhija in South Garo Hills on October 31, 2018 morning at about 12:30 am by a group of gun-toting criminals before he was able to make his escape on November 1, 2018 afternoon.

“He shook off his captors and made his way to the Sibbari Outpost. He also gave us the location of where he was taken and we have launched an operation based on his inputs,” said district police chief, Abraham T Sangma.

In similar other incident, a resident of Assam, Azizul Haque, was kidnapped from the daily market at Dingok in North Garo Hills last month.

Earlier, in May, another person was abducted from his residence at Purakhasia village in South West Garo Hills district and reportedly taken across to Bangladesh.
