More than 37 villages remained landlocked in northern Aizawl district after a flash flood destroyed temporary river bridge at Tuirini river Sunday night.
A bailey bridge over Tuirini river between Sesawng town and Khawruhlian collapsed on May 13 this year leaving one dead and several others injured.
The bridge near Sesawng village, about 40 km from the state capital Aizawl collapsed while under construction, the construction work began sometime early January this year. Though, residents use the bridge for crossing the river.
The bailey bridge over the Tuirini river was constructed in 1973 by Border Roads Task Force and the state government approved re-construction last year. Construction work for the new bailey bridge commenced from January and is expected to be completed by May this year.
Repair and reconstruction of the bailey bridge are underway, in order to connect the landlocked villages of northern Aizawl district a makeshift bridge was made by the state government PWD and the affected villagers on May 14. However flash flood on Sunday night destroyed the makeshift bridge adding woe to the people.
