Assam Police on Tuesday busted a fake call centre racket in Guwahati and apprehended as many as 37 people, including nine women, for allegedly duping a large number of people in the United States.
Sleuths from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Assam Police raided a fake call centre at the Zoo Road locality named Avenir Pvt. Ltd in Guwahati and arrested a total of 37 persons on the charge of cheating people.

A database of around seven lakh American citizens was seized from the office of the call centre, which was operating from a rented house, generating a revenue of over Rs 50 lakh per month, police said.
The officials further mentioned that the prime accused Rajesh Khan alias Rajesh Mukherjee alias Rajesh Bhai is originally from Gujarat. The team of the CID seized 22 monitors, 40 CPUs, one laptop, two pen drives, and 32 mobile phones along with other suspicious items.
The CID has registered a case (No CID PS 12/2019) under sections 120B, 419, 420, 468, 471 and 384 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66 of the Information Technology Act, 2000 against the accused.
