The report over the alleged destruction of the playground belonging to College of Veterinary Science at Khanapara in Guwahati by Assam BJP has evoked strong reactions.

Northeast Now on Thursday reported that during the last five years, the picturesque Multi-purpose Sports Complex at the southern fringe of Guwahati city transformed into a venue for mega political meetings, exhibitions and other non-sporting activities.

Northeast Now quoted Ranjeet Neog, Associate Director of Students Welfare (ADSW) of the Assam Agricultural University (AAU), who in a reply to an RTI application held the BJP and Kamrup (Metro) district administration responsible for destruction of the playground.

Denouncing the destruction of the playground by the saffron party and chasing out the students and teachers of the college from the field, All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi called upon the students of AAU to register protest against it.

“As the playground belongs to the College of Veterinary Science, the students of the college have every right on it. They should register protest to assert their rights,” Gogoi told Northeast Now.

Gogoi further demanded the state government not to allow organising political rallies and other non-sporting activities and make an alternative arrangement for this.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) leader Sanjib Bora has sought Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s intervention in this regard.

Miffed at organising non-sporting activities on the playground, Bora said, “The academic environment of the College of Veterinary Science has been affected because of frequently organising political rallies on the playground.”

He also slammed BJP for undertaking earth filling works on the twin cricket pitch of the playground in May 2017 for organising a rally and breaking of the boundary wall of the sports complex at several places to arrange law and order during a public meeting addressed by Narendra Modi before the last Lok Sabha elections.

Former AGP MP and professor of the veterinary college, Arun Kumar Srama alleged that security personnel often harass the students when any programme is organised on the playground and restrict entry of hostel inmates of the college on the road leading to their two hostels.

“Those who are responsible for destruction of the playground must give compensation to the college authorities,” Sarma said, adding “The rights of the students and teachers on the playground must be ensured.”

When contacted, Assam Agriculture University Teachers’ Association general secretary Himangshu Brauh refused to comment.
