East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner (Supply) has warned traders who are taking advantage of the prevailing situation in Shillong and selling essential items at unreasonable and exorbitant price.

There have been complaints that some unscrupulous shop keepers, taking advantage of the ongoing curfew in the city, have increased the price of various essential commodities thereby affecting the consumers especially the poor.

The DC also admitted that in view of the prevailing law and order situation in Shillong that has resulted to the promulgation of curfew, many shop keepers and retailers took advantage of the situation by escalating prices of essential commodities.

“After assessing the stock position of essential commodities with traders and stockist, there is no shortage of essential items. Therefore there is no reason for retailers and shop keepers to hike the prices of essential items,” the DC said. He warned of taking strong action against retailers, shop keepers if found selling essential items at unreasonable and exorbitant price.
