Nirbhaya convicts.

A Delhi court on Thursday has directed Tihar jail authorities to submit a report on the status of scheduled execution of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya rape-murder case.

The directive comes a day after the Tis Hazari court had put a stay on the hanging of the four convicts on January 22 in the case over a mercy petition filed by one of the convicts.

It may be mentioned here that after facing rejection from the apex court, convict Mukesh has moved a mercy plea against his pending capital punishment before the President earlier this week.

He is also the only convict who had also approached Delhi High Court against the death warrant.

The Court, however, rejected his mercy plea stating that Mukesh should have approached the sessions court or the apex court, following which, he moved the Delhi court seeking postponement of the date of his execution, along with the three other convicts in the Nirbhaya rape-murder case.

The High Court expressed displeasure on the ‘strategic’ mercy plea to delay their execution on January 22.

Mukesh’s mercy plea, will, however, be heard on Friday.

The four convicts were to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail.
