Guwahati: The Assam Congress and the Trinamool Congress on Thursday (September 5, 2024) accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of misguiding the people of Assam on the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.
CM Sarma on Wednesday (September 4, 2024) stated that the Cabinet decided to implement 57 of the 67 recommendations made by a high-powered committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and led by retired judge Biplab Kumar Sarma to give shape to Clause 6.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah said that it is just a political ‘jumla’ (trite) and the Assam government can only send proposals for any matter under the jurisdiction of the Central government.
On the other hand, Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Dev stated that the BJP-led state government should make public all the recommendations of the high-powered committee and also clarify how the Assam Cabinet does the job of the Central government.

Dev, while stating that the panel’s report is yet to be officially made public, said the report neither on the MHA website nor on the Assam government’s website.
While denying relying on a ‘leaked copy’ she said that before Clause 6 can be implemented, the term ‘Assamese’ needs to be defined first.
She added that CM Sarma should show the formal approval of acceptance of the high-powered committee’s recommendations.
The Rajya Sabha MP further said that nothing is in the public domain to say that the panel’s report has been accepted by the Union government. She asked the reason for keeping the committee’s report so confidential.
