The Opposition Congress on Thursday made it clear that it would field candidates for by-polls to Ranikor constituency and South Tura constituencies.
“In the light of the confusion created with regard to fielding of party candidate for Ranikor Assembly Constituency, the Meghalaya PCC hereby clarifies that the Indian National Congress would field candidates in both Ranikor and South Tura Constituencies as and when the announcements for the by-elections to both constituencies are made,” Meghalaya PCC working president, James S Lyngdoh said in a statement issued on Thursday.
Lyngdoh also said that at present, the process of revamping the Ranikor Block Congress Committee (RBCC) is being done by the team of BCC members led by its convenor.
By-elections to Ranikor and South Tura constituencies have to be held after senior Congress MLA, Martin M Danggo and first time NPP legislator, Agatha K Sangma resigned as members of the state Assembly recently.
Earlier it was reported that the Congress might not field candidate for Ranikor by-poll and may support the candidate of the United Democratic Party.
The UDP is part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government which is being led by the NPP.
The NPP will field Danggo as its candidate from Ranikor, while Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma will contest from South Tura seat in the upcoming by-polls.
