The Opposition Congress in Assam has condemned the BJP-led government in the state for not allowing former chief minister Tarun Gogoi to address a press conference at the Assam House in New Delhi.
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) spokesperson Rituparna Konwar said this on Thursday while adding that the Assam House authorities denied permission to the former three-time Assam CM to address the media inside the room he was staying in the Assam House.
Gogoi has been staying in Assam House for the last three days.
After being denied permission to hold a press conference, Gogoi later addressed the media along the street in front of the Assam House.
“We condemn this dictatorial act of the chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government in Assam. Why the Sonowal government has so much fear for Tarun Gogoi?” Konwar said adding that the BJP-led government in Assam is scared that Gogoi can expose the lies of the government.
“However, if the government thinks that they can silence Tarun Gogoi as well as the Congress party by resorting to such undemocratic means, they are only living in fool’s paradise,” Konwar said.
“When the former chief minister asked Kailash Chand Samria, principal resident commissioner of Assam House about the reasons for not granting permission, he said that there is a government order not to allow holding press conferences in Assam House. Samaria, however, failed to produce any such order when asked by the former chief minister,” said Konwar.
The former chief minister intended to address the media on some of the burning issues concerning the state including the issues related to the updating of National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the claim of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday where he targeted the Congress over the NRC.
