The high-level committee constituted for the implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord will meet on Wednesday in New Delhi.

A committee member on Tuesday informed receiving a communique regarding the Wednesday’s meeting.

The earlier committee was constituted in January earlier this year, which was to be headed by retired IAS officer MP Bezbaruah.

Several members, including members from All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), refused to be a part of it owing to the opposition to Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2016.

And hence there was not much progress and it remained a non-starter.

The Committee is expected to suggest constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards as envisaged in Clause 6 of the Accord.

It will hold discussions with all stakeholders and assess the required quantum of reservation of seats in Assam Legislative Assembly and local bodies for Assamese people.

It will also examine the effectiveness of actions since 1985 to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

It will also assess the requirement of measures to be taken to protect Assamese and other indigenous languages of Assam.

It will also assess the quantum of reservation in employment under the government.

The committee shall look into other measures to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of Assamese people.

The committee is headed by Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma and includes various individuals and organizational representatives.
