Campaigning came to an end at 5 pm on Tuesday for total seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the northeastern states that are going to polls in the second phase on April 18.

In the second phase of parliamentary elections, Assam’s Autonomous District, Nagaon, Silchar, Karimganj and Mangaldai LS constituencies; Tripura’s East Tripura LS constituency and Manipur’s Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency will go to polls.

Meanwhile, the Hailakandi district in Assam’s Barak Valley has imposed section144 CrPC in the run-up to the second phase of Lok Sabha elections.

Two Lok Sabha constituencies in Barak Valley — Silchar and Karimganj along with three others in Assam’s Brahmaputra Valley are going to polls on April 18.

“Section 144 CrPC has been promulgated in the entire district in view of reports and happenings that there is every likelihood of disturbance in connection with ensuing parliamentary elections,” said Hailakandi district magistrate Keerthi Jalli.

The order that comes into force from 5 pm on Tuesday will continue till April 19.

The order imposing section 144 CrPC prohibits assembly of five or more persons in front of polling stations or any other public places or carrying of fire arms and weapons. It also prohibits bursting of fire crackers, holding of public meetings, procession, dharna and rallies.

The order states that no campaign can take place once the campaigning ends and that no persons or party functionaries who are not voters of the constituency can remain there as their continued presence may vitiate the atmosphere for free and fair polls.

Anyone violating the order will be dealt with strictly as per provisions of IPC, the order stated.
