CAB threatens Northeast’s identity, says Anup Chetia

Pro-talk United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Anup Chetia on Saturday identified CAB as a serious threat to the identity of Northeast.

He said it will completely destroy the indigenous identity, language, art, and culture of the region.

Speaking to a national news agency, the leader urged the Centre to not implement the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in the Northeast.

Adding further he said the ULFA strongly opposes the implementation of CAB in the region.

Chetia further questioned the Centre on the validity of NRC if it is hellbent to implement CAB.

He reiterated that the indigenous people of the region are now united against the contentious bill.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday announced in the Rajya Sabha the CAB is needed for granting citizenships to the non-Muslim refugees who were discriminated on basis of religion in Pakistan, Bangladesh or Afghanistan.

In short, CAB will ensure citizenship to Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and Parsi refugees from these countries who have been living in India.
