NESO leaders with JD (U) general secretary KC Tyagi in New Delhi on Saturday.

Continuing its tirade against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), a delegation North East Student Organisation (NESO) on Saturday called on Janata Dal (United) leader KC Tyagi and appealed for his support.

“We met KC Tyagi and sought JD’s (U) support against the bill which is posing as a big threat to the indigenous people of Northeast in general and Assam in particular,” said AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya.

He said that CAB would also violate the fundamental rights of the people of Northeast.

The delegation members included among others AASU president Dipanka Nath, NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa.

“KC Tyagi has assured us that his party would oppose the bill in the Parliament,” said Bhattacharya.

Talking to this correspondent, Tyagi said that JD (U) was against the CAB on earlier occasions too.

“We would suggest that the Bill should be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) before it gets introduced in the Parliament…and whatever unanimous decision comes up, our party will support it,” said Tyagi.

The Bill was passed by Lok Sabha but the government did not table it in Rajya Sabha as it did not have the required numbers in the Upper House to pass it.

The Bill lapsed as the term of the 16th Lok Sabha ended in May this year.
