The Bangladesh government for the first time has expressed concerns over the fallout of the updating of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
According to reports, Bangladesh foreign minister A K Abdul Momen had told a local television channel recently that though the process of updating the NRC is Assam is not a matter of concern of his country, but there is some kind of apprehension.
He was quoted as saying that his country is already burdened with the Rohingya refugees and that Bangladesh cannot take any more of deportees.
However, it is not clear yet as to where those who are identified as immigrants after publication of the final NRC will be deported.
Momen was further quoted as saying that the Bengali origin people of Assam are living here for the last 75 years and that they are Indian citizens.
Notably, last Bangladesh has categorically said it was none of their business when the first draft NRC did not carry the names of around 40 lakh suspected migrants.
