Md Moniruzzaman, First Secretary and Head of the mission, Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, Agartala, appreciated the new Bharatiya Janata Party-Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (BJP-IPFT) Government of Tripura for its clampdown against drug smugglers in the last six months since it assumed office.

Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh from three sides. The neighbouring country has always complained about Tripura being used as an entry point by drug smugglers to smuggle ganja, cough syrup and tablets to Bangladesh which badly affects its youths.

With more than 50,000 kg of ganja, 1.5 lakh cough syrup, 2 lakh tablets including Yuba and other drugs including heroin and brown sugar seized by various security forces in Tripura, the neighbouring nation is “happy” as they have also launched a similar operation against drug smugglers across the border, informed the senior diplomat.

The envoy also informed that to further improve the Indo-Bangla ties, especially on the trade front, recently the Cabinet of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has decided to allow India to use its two ports including one sea port at Chittagong which will benefit Tripura and other northeastern India States. He gave this bit of information on the sidelines of the Press conference in his office.
