Assam chief minister Sarbanadna Sonowal requested the weavers of Assam to weave cloths to capture markets of 13 nations consist of 10 South East Asian countries and three BBN (Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal) countries, as the government is always there to play the role of catalyst in this regard.

Inaugurating the second Weavers’ Convention-2019 at Amingaon in Kamrup district on Friday, chief minister Sonowal said Assam weavers, who are famous for weaving dreams on their looms, should explore and capitalise markets of 13 countries inhabited by 80 thousand crore consumers to sell their products.

Lauding the creativity of the Assamese weavers and high demands of their products, Sonowal said that if they (weavers) produce cloths using the latest technology they can create high demands throughout the 10 South East Asian Countries and three BBN countries.

Chief minister Sonowal said that though decades of neglect by the previous governments has put the development of Assam on a slumber, the new BJP-led government led and anchored  by Narendra Modi has added new dimension to the growth narratives of the state.

He also said that Advantaged Assam: Global Investors’ Summit held in Assam last year witnessed investment proposal of Rs. 79,000 crore. However, in view of the investors’ friendly created in the state by the new dispensation, a total of Rs. 50,000 crore has already been grounded.

Chief minister Sonowal also said that ever since the BJP-led dispensation has come to power in the state, his government is trying its best to provide social security, dignity and economic empowerment to the people of Assam.

He also said that carrying forward government’s commitment to lend economic and social empowerment to the people of all sections, government has launched Kanaklata Mahila Sabalikaran Achoni, Swahid Kushal Konwar Sarbajanin Briddha Pension Scheme, Atal-Amrit Yojana, Deendayal Divyangjan Pension Achoni, Chief Minister Samagra Grammya Unnayn Yojana etc.

Assam has rich legacy of great women personalities like Sati Radhika, Sati Sadhini, Kanaklata Baruah who enriched social fabric of the state and the Chief Minister urged upon the weavers of Assam to emulate them and become prominent in weaving so that Assam can create niche in  the global market of handloom and sericulture. Sonowal also said that the weavers should weave maximum and superior quality gamochas to beat the demand of the same brought from outside.

Synchronsing with the occasion, Sonowal also handed over awards to 16 weavers for showing excellence in their respective fields of vocation. Earlier, Chief Minister Sonowal paid floral tributes in the memory of the CRPF Jawans who were killed in Kashmir valley in insurgent attack on Thursday. The meeting also observed one minute silence in their memory.

Handloom, Textiles and Sericulture Minister Ranjit Dutta while speaking on the occasion, gave an overview of the bouquet of schemes launched for the welfare of 25 lakh weavers of the state directly and indirectly associated with handloom and textiles. He also said that government of Assam has taken several steps for increasing commercial production of handloom products in Assam.

It may be noted that around 35,000 weavers from eight districts have participated in the weavers’ convention which was organized by ARTFED. MLA Nalbari Ashok Sarma, MLA Dudhnoi Dipak Rabha and a host of dignitaries were present on the occasion.
