Assam weightlifter Papul Changmai has brought laurels to state and the country by winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Apia, the capital city of Samoa.
Changmai won the medal in the 81 kg senior category.

Changmai lifted a weight of 135 kg in snatch and 178 kg in clean and jerk.
By lifting a total weight of 313 kg, Changmai was able to bag a silver medal in the international weightlifting competition.
Indian weightlifter Ajay Singh bagged the gold medal in the 81 kg senior category by lifting a total weight of 338 kg.

Singh lifted a weight of 148 kg in snatch and 190 kg in clean and jerk.
Apart from Changmai, two weightlifters from Assam, Bornali Borah and Rekhamoni Gogoi recently bagged gold and silver medal respectively at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
While Borah bagged gold medal in the 45 kg junior category, Gogoi secured the silver medal in the 40 kg youth category.
The 2019 Commonwealth Senior, Junior and Youth Weightlifting Championships is being held from July 5 to July 15 at Apia in Samoa.

The winners of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships will be able to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the international competition is a qualification event for the upcoming Olympics.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships is held separately for men and women.
This year, a total of nine men and eight women of India participated in the junior category of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
For the senior category of the international weightlifting competition, nine men and nine women of the country participated.
A total of five men and three women of the country participated in the youth category of Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
