This incident has come to light just five days after the incident of two youths from Guwahati being lynched by a mob at Panjuri village under Dokmoka PS in Karbi Anglong.
The body of the woman, who went missing five days back, was recovered on Wednesday from river Kapili at Panimur.
“Two persons who pretended to be members of Village Defence Party (VDP) dragged the woman, who was sitting in front of a pan-shop on June 8, suspecting her to be a ‘child lifter’ and murdered her,” said sources.
Sources added, “Later, the miscreants threw the body into a stone quarry along river Kapili at Panimur area, which is 200 metre away from Panimur Police Station.”
Bowing to the pressure of the All Assam Gorkha Students’ Union (AAGSU), the police launched an operation and recovered the body of the missing woman and handed over it to her family members.
“A total of seven persons have been nabbed by police in this connection so far,” added sources.
While condemning the incident during a press conference here on Wednesday, leaders of around 10 local organisations have raised question over the role of police.
The leaders of the organisations demanded arrest of all the culprits involved in the incident and give exemplary punishment to them.
AAGSU president Jibon Sharma said, “Due to irresponsibility on the part of the police, people have witnessed another heinous act this time in Dima Hasao within a few days.”
AAGSU in association with Dimasa Mothers’ Association, Haflong Ladies Welfare Organisation, Diborai Mahila Samiti, Blue Hills Society, Aroho Society decided to submit a memorandum to the authorities concerned in this regard.
