In a first of its kind case in Tripura, North Tripura police have booked one Abul Hussain and his three relatives, after he allegedly gave instant triple talaq to his wife Salema Begum.

In addition to booking him under The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, the police have also filed a case of cruelty against him.

According to Kadamtala Police, Abul Hussain currently working in Saudi, sent a WhatsApp message to Salema on October 27 writing ‘talaq’ thrice and terminating the marriage.

Abul married Salema Begum of Kurti village under Bazarichhera in Karimganj district of Assam in 2015.

After receiving the message Salema reported the case to police as instant triple talaq is banned in India.

Following the complaint, police lodged a case and are further investigating the case.

“We are investing the case and action will be taken accordingly,” said Kadamtala PS officer-in-charge Krishnadhan Sarkar.
