Guwahati: Tezpur University researchers have developed a groundbreaking, eco-friendly tool to ensure fish quality and prevent food waste.

The innovative device, created by Monica Yumnam under the guidance of Prof Poonam Mishra and in collaboration with Prof Pabitra Nath, uses a smartphone-integrated sensor to detect chemical spoilage in fish.

This innovative technology has been recognized with the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI)-2023 award for its potential to safeguard public health, reduce food waste, and revolutionize fish quality monitoring.

The innovative device, created by Monica Yumnam under the guidance of Prof Poonam Mishra and in collaboration with Prof Pabitra Nath.

The device, titled “Customer friendly smartphone-based portable optical device for determination of chemical spoilage of fish suitable for field analysis,” offers a practical and affordable solution to a pressing food safety issue.  

The device utilizes a polyaniline (PANI) sensor, a pH-sensitive polymer that changes color as fish deteriorates.

By simply placing the sensor on the fish and inserting it into the device, users can obtain real-time spoilage analysis using a dedicated Android app.

Lab tests have demonstrated the sensor’s accuracy, with over 95% precision, making it comparable to expensive laboratory equipment.

Prof Shambhu Nath Singh, Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University, expressed his pride in the researchers’ achievements, stating, “Their dedication and innovative spirit have brought great honor to the University.”
