The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected the government’s plea to reopen and re-verify the data of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update exercise in Assam.

A bench comprising chief justice Ranjan Gogoi and justice RF Nariman said further that said that the security aspects of the data involving NRC will get the same kind as of Aadhaar, reports said.

“Only hard copies of lists of inclusions and exclusions to be provided at district offices. The NRC to be updated according to law laid down in section 66a Judgment,” chief justice Gogoi said.

According to Bar and Bench, the Court also directed for orders by the Tribunal will be challenged before the Gauhati High Court.

It was also suggested by the Court that the status of those persons born between 1971 and 1987 shall be decided and the NRC shall be updated based on the decision of the Constitution Bench with respect to the challenge to the provisions of the Citizenship Act.
