A Sashasta Seema Bal (SSB)jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself on his neck with service rifle on Sunday evening at Debendra Nagar SSB training centre here in Sonitpur district.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Numal Mahatta said head constable Daljit Sharma, 42, who hails from Rajori district of Jammu & Kashmir shot himself with his service rifle at the training centre on Sunday at around 5.30 pm.
The SSB training centre is 10 km from Tezpur police station.
Mahatta said Singh was coming from Himachal Pradesh with his company to Tawang and reached Tezpur on Sunday afternoon.
The SSB team on the way to Tawang halted at the training centre here for one night.
His service weapon with one magazine and 19 rounds of live cartridges and one empty cartridge were recovered from the spot.
Preliminary investigation suggests the case to be of suicide, added Mahatta. The exact reason which prompted him to take the extreme step was yet to be known.
A case has been registered at Panchmail police outpost under Tezpur police station.
His body was sent to Tezpur Kanaklata Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination on Monday morning and subsequently handed over to the SSB authorities.
