In a shocking incident, some unidentified miscreants pelted stones at a Bihu programme at Raha in Nagaon district where singer Zubeen Garg was performing on Saturday night.

Sources said the incident took place around 1am, just a few minutes after Zubeen started performing.

“The incident was shocking. No one was seriously injured and none of our instruments got damaged. A photographer, employed by the organising committee, sustained minor injuries and a piece of stone fell very close to our drummer,” Zubeen’s manager, Siddhartha Sarma, said.

Zubeen, however, has not filed a complaint with police. Sarma said they thought that it had been done by some drunken rowdies as there was a huge crowd at the event.

“It could be a misdeed of some drunken persons. But no action was taken as no complaint has been filed yet,” Nagaon superintendent of police Shankar Barata Raimedhi said.

The Assam police earlier had issued directive to the Bihu organisers to wrap up Bihu functions by midnight due to recurring incidents of violence.

Occurrence of Incidents of violence in Bihu programme is not new in the state.  Unruly scenes are witnessed at different Bihu functions late at night.

Several untoward incidents took place during the recent Rongali Bihu functions.  In several cases, the police had to resort to caning to control the situation at different places.

Cases of misbehaviour with artistes by several youths during the Bihu functions have been reported from different parts of the state.

Popular singer Priyanka Bharali was allegedly abused at ONGC Bihu function in Nazira recently.
