Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the Assam police should be able to create an atmosphere of security in the next 2-3 years, leading to doing away with “PSO culture” in the state.
“By gradually coming out of PSO culture and recruiting sufficient manpower, we should create an atmosphere of security where ideally nobody needs a PSO in next 2-3 years,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

CM Sarma made this statement on Monday while addressing the second Assam SPs conference underway at the oil town of Duliajan.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma further said that he wants to see an SP that could tell him that he could visit a district without security.

“I want to see an SP who can tell me that I could visit his district without security,” Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
Earlier, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requested Assam BJP leaders to give up their personal security officers (PSOs) terming it to be a “Congress culture”.
Over 100 top Assam police officials including SPs, additional ASPs and SDPOs representing 34 districts are participating in the two-day conference being held at the Zaloni club in Duliajan.
Sarma also stressed on the need for the Assam police to embrace emerging technologies to deal with changing nature of crimes.

“To deal with changing nature of crimes, our force should quickly adapt to emerging technologies. I am glad that Assam police has over the past few months made good progress in providing a citizen friendly atmosphere and at the same time coming down heavily on criminals,” the Assam chief minister said.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also stressed on the need for the state police to coordinate with other security agencies to meet emerging challenges.
He said that the police has to redefine its role and focus on fighting crime firmly, improve quality of investigation and be more citizen centric.
He added: “We have institutionalized the SPs conference to discuss various issues, law and order situations, citizen centric service or cases under investigation.”
The chief minister also informed that the next Assam SPs conference will be held after six months at the Police Training College in Assam’s Dergaon.
“Likewise, we will have deputy commissioners conference every six months. The second deputy commissioners conference will be held at Tezpur in March-April 2022,” Sarma said.
