“Floating a new political party in Assam will not solve the problems arising owing to the passing of Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA,” said former Assam CM Prafulla Mahanta.
The former Chief Minister was addressing the media in Guwahati on Monday, where he said India is a democratic country and anyone can float a political party.

“Since India is a democratic country, anyone can start a political party,” the former All Assam Students’Union (AASU) president added.
“But, considering the present situation of Assam, a new political party is not the answer and it will not be appropriate as well for I feel it will not solve the hopes and aspirations of the people,” he reiterated.
Mahanta’s statement comes after AASU president Dipankar Nath on Sunday hinted of floating a political party- an alternative to the BJP, AGP and Congress.

He said this at a protest programme organised by the artiste fraternity of Assam in Guwahati on Sunday at the Assam Engineering Insititute (AEI) playground in Guwahati.
“The BJP cheated on us. The AGP cheated on us. Congress has cheated on us. People are telling that we are holding protests but are there any alternatives?” Nath said on Sunday.
When he asked what should be done, actor-singer Zubeen Garg quipped, “We will form our own party.”
The AASU president further said that the students’ body will remain apolitical, but it will not shy away to venture into politics if “situation demands”.
“We will remain apolitical. But if the situation demands, we will venture into politics as well where the people’s participation will be primary,” Nath said.
Over 15000 people participated in the cultural protests called by the artiste fraternity of Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
