Police on Thursday gunned down two suspected members of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) in Kokrajhar district of Assam, officials said on Friday.
Kokrajhar Additional Superintendent of Police TR Pegu said, “Police on Thursday evening gunned down two armed persons in an encounter while two others managed to escaped.”
“We had information from a source that some people who claim to be from the NDFB(S) are engaged in extortion and will be visiting the village,” Hindustan Times reported quoting Pegu.
Adding further Pegu said, “The ambush was carried out in a bamboo grove after we received a tipoff about the movement of suspected NDFB militants in the area.”
“We noticed four motorbike-borne persons approaching the village and when they were directed to stop, the men responded with a burst of fire,” Pegu informed.
In retaliation, the police also fired back and injured two men, while two managed to escape.
The injured men, whose identities are yet to be ascertained, however, died on way to the hospital.
An AK series rifle, ammunition and some “incriminating documents” were recovered by the police from the spot.
