Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma meets PM Modi in Delhi on Tuesday

Guwahati: As Assam gears up for assembly elections in Marchโ€“April next year, the recent announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modiโ€™s visit to inaugurate major projects in the state is being closely watched through a political lens.

“In the coming days, Assam will welcome a galaxy of national leaders, including Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji & Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah Ji, to inaugurate transformative projects that will propel our growth to new heights โ€” reflecting Assamโ€™s rising stature in #NewIndia,” Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X this afternoon.

The state government is projecting the new Guwahati airport terminal and the Rs 10,601 crore Namrup Ammonia-Urea complex as symbols of progress.

“Had the privilege to call upon Honโ€™ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji in New Delhi today.

We have invited him to dedicate two major transformative projects to the people of Assam.

First is the brand new terminal of Guwahatiโ€™s LGBI Airport. This state-of-the-art project will catapult Guwahati into a major aviation hub and will equip the city to handle over 1.3 crore passengers.

Second is the foundation stone of the Rs 10,601 crore brownfield Ammonia-Urea complex at Namrup. This project will secure a critical fertiliser supply for the entire North East.

Grateful that Adarniya Modi Ji has kindly consented. We eagerly await his visit,” CM wrote on X on November 4, 2025.

โ€œThe optics are strong: big leaders, big projects, and a big message of development,โ€ said a political observer. โ€œBut the question remains: do these grand announcements address what people are actually struggling with?โ€

On the ground, the mood appears mixed. Unemployment continues to be a major concern among Assamโ€™s youth, many of whom feel left out of the growth narrative. โ€œJobs are scarce, prices are high, and weโ€™re not seeing much improvement in our daily lives,โ€ said a college graduate in Guwahati preparing for competitive exams.

Rising prices of essential commodities and recurring law-and-order incidents have also cast a shadow over the stateโ€™s claims of stability. In rural areas, the quality of healthcare remains a pressing issue. โ€œNew terminals and fertilizer plants are fine, but we want functioning hospitals and affordable medicine,โ€ said a resident of upper Assam.

The ruling BJP is banking on its development record and strong leadership appeal to retain power. Political analysts believe the Modiโ€“Shah visit will serve both as a development showcase and a soft campaign launch. โ€œThese events are designed to create momentum to remind voters that the Centre stands firmly behind Assam,โ€ noted a political strategist.

The opposition may question whether these projects will benefit ordinary citizens or remain largely symbolic. With rising inflation and unemployment, voters may be cautious.

An observer said, โ€˜The government is talking about transformation; the people are talking about survival. Which conversation wins in 2025 will decide Assamโ€™s next government.โ€™โ€
