As many as 233 inmates in 16 jails of Assam tested positive for COVID-19.

Out of these 233 cases, 105 were detected from the Sivasagar and Dibrugarh jails in the last couple of days.
As many as 54 inmates in Dibrugarh jail and 51 in Sivasagar jail tested COVID-19 positive.

However, the rate of infection among the inmates in the jails in Assam is less compared to last year when the pandemic broke.
Over 2500 inmates in Assam jails had tested positive for COVID-19 last year.
Nearly 1000 inmates in Assam jails have been vaccinated for COVID-19 till May 18.
Among those who received jabs of COVID-19 vaccines are declared foreigners.

Recently, the Gauhati High Court had registered a suo moto PIL in regards to vaccination of inmates lodged in different jails of Assam.
The Gauhati High Court directed the Assam Government to file an affidavit, updating on the process of vaccination of jail inmates.
