Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was a collective effort of everyone.

Addressing media persons at the conference hall of Brahmaputra State Guest House in Kharghuli of Guwahati on Monday afternoon, the Chief Minister reiterated that it’s just a draft and there is no need to panic if someone does not find his/her name in the draft NRC.

There is ample time to address the claims and objections, the Chief Minister had assured.

Sonowal while allaying fears of any untoward incident said this government is committed to ensuring peace and brotherhood in the State.

“We have also requested the various political parties to cooperate in the process,” Sonowal said.

“The people of Assam helped us a lot in order to complete the process in a peaceful way. We took the work forward under the order of the Supreme Court. The process was transparent and unbiased,” the Chief Minister further said.

“The first draft published on December 31 last year was an example that all the communities in the State worked together for the cause in a peaceful manner and I believe the future work will also be the same,” Sonowal added.

He added that the government will ensure that no miscreant or unscrupulous circles breach the peace in the State at any cost.
Sonowal also said that every community participated in the process of updating the NRC in a very democratic manner.

He further warned that any wrong news or misinformation regarding the NRC will be checked and urged the people not to fall prey to such news and rumours.
