On the first day of 2022, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that former Chief Ministers in Assam will no longer be entitled to security cover or a government house.
Speaking to media persons, Sarma said that from the next term onwards, former Chief Ministers will be not provided with security cover unless there is a real threat to the concerned person.
He added that a review will be held on the threats and based on that, the former CMs will get the security cover and there will be no room for the facility just because he or she had held the office.
However, Sarma clarified that this new rule will only start from the next term and former Chief Ministers Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Sarbananda Sonowal will still be able to move with their current arrangements.
He also added that the number of vehicles and personnel with him will also be reduced when he will be moving around the city.
As of now, CM Sarma’s convoy has 22 vehicles but from Monday, his convoy will have only 7-8 vehicles.
