Guwahati: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a supplementary chargesheet against two more individuals in connection with the seizure of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during Assamโ€™s Independence Day celebrations in 2024, raising the total number of accused in the case to five.

Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi, both residents of Dibrugarh district, were arrested in June 2025 after investigators uncovered their alleged role in financing the bomb plot. The NIA invoked provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act while filing the chargesheet before the Special Court in Guwahati.

Investigators said the duo provided financial support to Jahnu Boruah, a previously charged accused who admitted to planting four of the 11 IEDs recovered by Assam Police in August 2024. The devices were reportedly part of a coordinated plan to disrupt Independence Day celebrations following a protest and boycott call by ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah.

The case was initially registered by Assam Police at Dispur police station before being transferred to the NIA in September 2024. Authorities have described the incident as part of a wider ULFA(I) conspiracy aimed at targeting the Indian government through coordinated attacks across Assam.

Three other accused were charged by the NIA in June 2025. The agency continues to investigate the network responsible for terror financing and operational planning linked to the case.
