Despite an order by the Gauhati High court to restore mobile internet, the BJP led government in Assam has decided not to restore mobile internet service across the state.

The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday passed an order which directed the Assam government to consider resumption of  mobile internet services from 3.00 pm on Tuesday.

The court’s direction came following hearing of four public interest litigation (PIL)s.

A division bench of the High Court comprising chief justice Ajay Lamba and justice Achintya Malla Bujor Barua passed the order directing the state government to consider restoration of Internet services.

“The Gauhati High Court has passed an order to restore mobile internet service. However, our security agencies have advised us not to restore the service till further improvement of the situation in Assam,” said Assam state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The Assam government had lifted the curfew from Guwahati and other areas from 6.00 am on Tuesday.

There has been no fresh violence for the last 72 hours and situation is limping back to normal.

“The chief minister is reviewing the state’s law and order situation every evening with top police and civil administration officials. The government has decided not to restore the mobile internet service today and tomorrow,” he said.

“The government will review the situation on Friday and then take a decision on restoration of mobile internet service,” he said.
