After a week-long search, the mutilated body of a nine-year-old girl has been recovered from alongside the Doigrung river in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

The girl has been missing along with another 11-year-old girl since last Saturday.

The body was spotted by locals who were on the lookout for the missing girls for the past one week.

Earlier, the body of the 11-year-old was recovered from a nearby forest on Monday, two days after the duo went missing from Lokhiram Rongphar village under Chockihola Police Station in Karbi Anglong district.

As per locals, both the girl had gone fishing in the Doigrung river on Saturday morning and did not return home.

Locals including members of several students’ organizations joined in the lookout for the missing girls covering a vast area of forest adjoining the village.

Preliminary investigation suggested the involvement of locals in the gruesome murder of the minor girls and a probe under sections 302, 201, 34 IPC has been initiated by the police.

Police are quizzing the locals and are trying to gather a lead on the case.

Meanwhile, KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang while condemning the inhuman act, exerted faith that the perpetrators will be nabbed soon.

CEM Ronghang also provided financial assistance of RS 50,000 as compensation to the bereaved families.
