Guwahati: Meghalaya Congress leader Manuel Badwar emphasized the importance of keeping religion separate from politics, responding to controversial comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sarma had attributed the BJP’s electoral setbacks in Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur to opposition from followers of a specific religion.

Badwar condemned Sarma’s remarks as divisive and reflective of the BJP’s declining influence in the Northeast.

“His statements about other religions and beliefs are irresponsible and suggest he acts without consideration,” Badwar stated.

On June 4, Sarma asserted, “In Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Manipur, a particular religion opposed the NDA, which influenced the election outcomes. This isn’t a political defeat; it’s a challenge that no one can overcome against a religion.”

Badwar criticized Sarma’s leadership, predicting a further decline for the BJP in Assam and across the country.
Additionally, Badwar rebuked Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma for suggesting that politicians exploit religion to attract voters.
“Such thoughtless statements only serve to undermine peace and development,” Badwar said.
