A local court in Manipur has awarded the death sentence to a 40-year-old man for the rape and murder of his pregnant girlfriend ten years back.
The court on Wednesday awarded the death penalty to convict Irom Chaoren Singh under sections 376 (rape), 302 (murder) and 316 (causing the death of an unborn child) of the IPC.

Calling the case as ‘rarest of the rare’, the court ruled, “Such cruelty and inhuman act deserve to be wiped out and there is no mitigating factor to deter in other alternative punishment.”
Singh, a resident of Thoubal district in Manipur, was convicted by Special judge Justice A Noutuneshwari Devi.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict.

“Irom Chaoren Singh is sentenced to death with a fine of Rs 50,000 only and the convict shall be hanged to death,” the order stated.
Further, the court recommended compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the victim’s brother.
According to reports, in June 2010, Singh had allegedly raped and murdered his pregnant girlfriend.
Her body was dumped in a river in Imphal as he didn’t want to marry the girl or have the child.
