The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Assam has come down heavily on the BJP-led Assam government for its unconditional support to the privatisation drive in the state.

LDP state chairman Holiram Terang said, “Central government under BJP is privatising everything and unfortunately the state dispensation is acting like a puppet.”

Recently the Union Cabinet approved privatisation of the terminals and other tourist facilities of three airports-Jaipur, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala government has already filed an appeal against privatisation of Thiruvananthapuram Airport in the Kerala High Court.

“But the state leadership of Assam BJP did not utter a single word against the move,” Terang said in a press statement.

“Sonowal government privatised 12 oil fields in 2016. Between 1997 to 2012, 257 oil fields were privatised. There is news to privatise the State Zoo also. So the question is whose development does this government want to do? People or the corporations’?” Terang said.

Meanwhile, LDP Assam has extended support to the all India strike called by 10 central trade unions of the country on Thursday (November 26).

LDP state president Guna Gogoi in this regard said: “We support this strike. The government is operating on ‘Profit Before People’ principle. The privatisation moves are designed to benefit the big corporations.”

“Government should understand the difference between ‘pro-business’ and ‘pro-market’. Polices should always be pro-market. But when you make pro-business policies keeping in mind the interest of corporation then it is nothing but crony capitalism,” Gogoi added.

LDP demanded that the privatisation of the state’s resources by Centre be opposed by the state government.
