Jorhat has recorded the first positive coronavirus case in Assam.

Confirming this, Jorhat deputy commissioner Roshni A Korati said a four-and-half-years old girl has tested positive for novel coronavirus in the laboratory of Jorhat Medical College and Hospital here on Saturday.

The Jorhat deputy commissioner said the samples of the patient have been sent to the Regional Medical Research Centre under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) at Lahowal in Dibrugarh district for a recheck.

The deputy commissioner said the result from the Lahowal lab is expected to arrive by Sunday afternoon.

“The case is from Pulibor. The four-and-half-years old child came from Bihar. The girl, her sister, and mother came to Jorhat on March 19,” the deputy commissioner said.

“ASHA, ANM, and MPW visited the family on March 20 and brought them to the JMCH as the girl exhibited symptoms. A sample was taken and tested, and this evening, the result came positive,” Korati further said.

Korati said they have started to contact tracing and that everybody was is placed under home isolation, including the ASHA workers.

The family has been shifted to the JMCH isolation ward.
