A 24-year-old youth, who returned from London on Friday, admitted himself to the Kushal Konwar Civil Hospital at Goalghat to get tested for coronavirus.

The youth, hailing from Dergaon in Assam’s Golaghat district, has been pursuing higher studies in London for the last two years.

“He is currently being put under isolation and his samples have been sent for test,” said P Uday Kumar, sub-divisional health officer of Golaghat.

“We are ready for eventualities. Monitoring of people coming from abroad and other states is also going on,” he added.

According to Union health ministry data, the novel coronavirus cases in India increased to 283 on Saturday.

Out of the 283 cases, 39 are foreign nationals.

Maharashtra is the worst affected state in the country with 63 confirmed cases while Kerala has the second-highest number of cases with 40.

The ministry on Saturday said: “As of today, we are contact-tracing over 7,000 persons and we will let people know if we find cases of community transmission.”

The ministry further said: “People should not go for coronavirus test out of fashion or for confidence-building, it should be done as per protocol.”

While Delhi has reported 26 positive coronavirus cases including one foreigner, Uttar Pradesh has recorded 24 cases including one foreigner.

The UK has recorded 3,983 confirmed cases so far with 177 deaths.
