Assam police on Tuesday arrested ULFA (I) rebel Bijoy Asom from Doomdooma in Tinsukia district in connection with the grenade blast in Guwahati.

Police officials said a team of Tinsukia police led by DSP (HQ) Bitul Chetia during an operation arrested Bijoy Asom from Dangori village under Doomdooma police station in Tinsukia district around 5.30 pm.

Guwahati commissioner of police Deepak Kumar  said investigation into the grenade  attack is almost in the final stage.

“We have manged to arrest all the culprits involved in the grenade attack. Apart from city police, Nagaon police, Dibrugarh police, Golaghat police , Charaideo police and Tinsukia police helped in the operations to nab them,” Kumar told Northeast Now.

He said arrested Bijoy Asom is being taken to Guwahati from Doomdooma for interrogation.

Police commissioner Kumar had earlier said ULFA (I) rebel Bijoy hurled the grenade on May 15 in front of the Guwahati Central shopping mall on busy RG Baruah Road in Guwahati injuring 12 persons.

Police have already arrested Jahnabi Saikia, a little known TV actor and her associate, pro-talk ULFA leader Pranamoy Rajguru besides three others—Chinmoy Laskar, Indra Mohan Bora and Amit Ballav Goswami.

Both Jahnabi and Pranamoy were arrested from a rented house in city’s Panjabari area while former ULFA rebel Amit was held from Golaghat. Chinmoy and Indra were apprehended from Guwahati and Nagaon respectively.

According to police, Chinmoy, a resident of city’s Christianbasti area, joined ULFA (I) few months back and Indra worked as linkman of the outfit.
