Three teenagers including one girl jumped into Brahmaputra river at Chandrapur on the outskirts of Assam’s capital city Guwahati on Monday.
While the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel could fish out the body of one of the trio, search operation is still on for the other two — a boy and a girl.
The trio has been identified as Ranjan Deka, Bhargab Deka, who were students of Jagiroad College and Trishna Kalita, who was a student of Chandrapur College.
Police said that five students of Jagiroad College went to Topoban, a picnic spot located on the outskirts of Guwahati.
“However, one girl jumped into the river suddenly. The two other friends of her also jumped immediately to save her,” said an eyewitness.
“The NDRF has started the rescue operation immediately but could fish out the body of Ranjan Deka so far. Search operation is on for Trishna Kalita and Bhargab Deka,” police said.
The two other friends, who were also present on the occasion, said that Trishna Kalita jumped into the river first after some altercations with her boyfriend.
“She jumped into the river suddenly. After her, Ranjan and Bhargab also jumped to save her, but none of them knew swimming,” said one of the two students who were present there when the incident took place.
