With the election to the NC Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) in Dima Hasao district is just round the corner, it seems the law and order situation in the district is deteriorating with two incidents of kidnapping and firing reported within 24 hours.

After an incident of kidnapping that took place 24 hours back where an old man was kidnapped from Owajo village in Maibang sub-division of Dima Hasao district, another incident of firing has taken place at Haflong on Saturday afternoon.

Sensation prevails in the hill district of the State after an official was shot at in a Government office in the midst of Haflong, the district headquarters, in the afternoon on Saturday.

According to information, at around 4 pm on Saturday, an armed miscreant entered the office of Rupam Dibragede alias Donald at the College Road in Haflong and fired at him.

However, after opening fire at the official, the miscreant was able to flee from the scene.

It has been learnt that Rupam has received two shots in his chest.

Though the Haflong police have become alert after the incident, they have failed to arrest none in this connection.

This incident has caused panic among the common people of the area.

When contacted, the Superintendent of Police, Dima Hasao, Prashanta Saikia said it might be a case of personal clash and has no other link. “However, police are investigating to know about the fact behind the firing incident,” said Saikia, adding, “Law and order has been under control in the district.”

It may be mentioned that one year back, Rupam Dibrage

dejoined at Diphu after being transferred from Haflong.

But after his transfer from Diphu, Rupam again joined the office of the Food & Civil Supplies Department at Haflong as an area officer.

So far, no FIR has been lodged in this regard.

It may be mentioned that on Friday, a 70-year-old man, identified as Painsodao Nunisa from Owajo village under Maibang sub-division, was kidnapped by a group of armed miscreants at the gun point.

As per information, a group of 5-6 armed miscreants came in a black colour car and lifted Nunisa. There is no information about his whereabouts till now.

Sources informed that a huge amount has been sought by the kidnappers as ransom for his release. Kidnapped Nunisa is the father of businessman Pabitra Nunisa.
