Gauhati University to set up Centre for Brahmaputra Studies

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal’s idea to set up ‘Centre for Brahmaputra Studies’ has finally got the green signal with the State Government approving the proposal that the Gauhati University authorities had submitted.

The University, in collaboration with the North Eastern Council (NEC), is organizing a two-day national conclave focused on the Brahmaputra Basin.

The workshop which is to be held from February 12 will feature various talks and discussions on the range of topics and issues concerning the river basin.

In order to further encourage discussions and measure into improving the trans-boundary characteristics of the basin, the University authorities have taken the decision to set up ‘Centre for Brahmaputra Studies’, in order to encourage focused research, capacity building and come up with preventive measures to various problems pertinent to the Brahmaputra basin.

About 150 individuals from different parts of the country are set to grace the two day conclave, according to a press release by GU.

Along with individuals representing various knowledge institutions, governmental agencies and departments, the conclave will also be attended by experts, planners and policy makers and will focus on various aspects of the Brahmaputra basin.

Dr Mridul Hazarika, Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University, said that DoNER Minister and NEC Chairman Dr Jitendra Singh will inaugurate the conclave on February 12 at 10:30 am.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will grace the occasion as a chief guest while Keshab Mahanta, State Water Resource Minister will attend the event as a distinguished guest.
